Forced Marriages

A forced marriage is a marriage which takes place without the consent of both parties. You have to be willing and consent to the marriage, without any emotional pressure, blackmail or threats. Our forced marriage team understand the issues surrounding this area of law and understand that it can be a difficult time for the victim. This does not make it right for anyone to be forced into a marriage that they do not consent to.

The Forced Marriage Act 2007, gives the Court powers to make Forced Marriage Protection Orders. Emergency orders can be made by the Court to protect a victim. It is not just the victim who can apply to the Court for a Forced Marriage Protection Order. Many others can make an application on behalf of the victim.

If you suspect a victim is being forced into a marriage against their will, contact us immediately on 01274 502814 or email us at fariha@portobellasolicitors.co.uk, and our specialist team will guide you in the right direction.
